In association with the Darling Foundry, Urban Occupations Urbaines presents darlingARCADE, concieved by Montreal artists Stephen Lawson and Aaron Pollard, 2boys.tv. darlingARCADE takes Griffintown as its inspiration for creating fictionalized and fabricated visions of real locations within the neighbourhood. It is an interactive artwork that challenges local perceptions of the neighbourhood, allowing spectators to question what is true and to create and proliferate their own constructed realities about Griffintown.

darlingARCADE uses as its inspiration, specifically, the discarded parts of the neighbourhood, the people and places that live in-between, below and hidden within its shadows. The creation process is inspired by the flâneur as classically defined by Charles Baudelaire and Walter Benjamin.

2boys.tv will work with artist-participants in an workshop forum to conceive of multiple narratives that will be installed in shoeboxes. Each shoebox contains a scene, a mise-en-abyme, a mysterious theatre within a theatre. The scenes, the miniature arcades, all together make up one larger narrative. Participating artists include: Judith Bauer, Joanna Donehower, Andre Fry, Jonathon Lemieux, Maya Ersan, Étienne Rochon, Allison Moore, Skid More, Shereen Soliman, Mark Sussman, Jesse Orr, Kathleen Vaughan, Natalie Doonan, Jason Knight and Sarah Barr.

The arcade-retail outlet evoked is that of a shoe store. Participants, and those who happen upon it while wandering, enter the store, designed to look like a new and hip place to buy footwear. Inside the store are many shoes lining one wall. Clerks assist the spectators to sit down and select shoes they would like to try.

Instead of bringing the shoes to the “client” the clerks bring out a corresponding shoebox. Within each shoebox are many little “arcades” that together, in their entirety, form an invented psychosocial map of the city: a wanderer’s guide to the imagined nooks and crannies that are easily missed from the vantage point of a car, train or bus.

Each shoebox contains a scene. The scenes all together make up one larger narrative. The spectator can choose the order and the number of the scenes that they view. The visions inside the shoeboxes are revealed using a variety of methods, from simple static maquettes or tableaux, to more technically involved video and audio works using new advances in the miniature delivery of this material, to participatory works that invite viewers to inscribe their own fabrications and reflections on the city.

Existing as both an interactive and contemplative performance work, darlingARCADE seeks to “polish” the dark little urban cracks so they themselves become a city of light, providing a frame (a mise-en-abyme, the shoebox, this strange mysterious theatre within a theatre) that valorizes and celebrates the forgotten and discarded. darlingARCADE fictionalizes and fabricates visions of real locations within the host city. It is an interactive artwork that challenges local perceptions of neighbourhoods allowing spectators to question what is true and to create and proliferate their own constructed realities about these locales.

En collaboration avec les artistes Stephen Lawson et Aaron Pollard de 2boys.tv, la plate-forme de création Urban Occupations Urbaines est à la recherche de participants dans le but de prendre part à la création du projet darlingARCADE.

À Montréal depuis 2002, Stephen Lawson et Aaron Pollard ont créé et présenté à l’échelle nationale et internationale un impressionnant répertoire mettant en scène cabarets multimédias épiques, performances, vidéos et installations qui explorent les relations entre la performance, l’illusion, l’imitation et l’authenticité au coeur d’environnements métaphoriques, technologiques, spatiaux et immersifs.

Urban Occupations Urbaines (UOU) consiste en une plate-forme de création qui souhaite rassembler un groupe diversifié d’artistes locaux et internationaux dans le but d’examiner de façon créative et critique la fertilité culturelle de sites urbains en transition. Le site actuellement étudié par UOU est le district historique industriel de Griffintown à Montréal.

darlingARCACDE fait office de boutique qui propose une collection spéciale de boîtes à chaussures contenant des scènes miniatures inspirées du paysage culturel évolutif de Griffintown. Cet atelier intensif comportera deux étapes de création.

Dans le cadre de la première étape de l’atelier, Stephen Lawson et Aaron Pollard de 2boys.tv guideront les participants sélectionnés dans le processus de conceptualisation et de création de leur propre vision romancée et fabriquée des lieux réels du quartier de Griffintown. Les participants aborderont les différentes phases pédagogiques et méthodologiques relatives à la conception et à la construction des boîtes à chaussures. L’atelier s’amorcera par une balade dans le district de Griffintown à Montréal, lors de laquelle les participants devront s’inspirer en recueillant sons, photos, vidéos, objets, entrevues, souliers et matériel de recherche (musique, guides touristiques, cartes, livres, etc.). Ils travailleront ensuite dans un studio afin de transposer leurs impressions et récits romancés sur le quartier à l’intérieur des théâtres représentés par les boîtes à chaussures. Les chaussures exposées seront également métamorphosées en extravagants objets, lesquels refléteront dans une certaine mesure le lieu qu’ils représentent.

Une installation interactive, seconde étape de l’atelier, permettra aux participants d’agir en tant que vendeurs dans la boutique darlingARCADE. Le public/spectateur entre dans la boutique s’apparentant à un nouvel endroit pour acheter des chaussures. Les vendeurs demandent au spectateur de s’asseoir et l’aident à choisir les souliers qu’il veut essayer. À défaut d’apporter les chaussures au « client », les vendeurs apportent la boîte à chaussures correspondante, laquelle contient un mystérieux théâtre, à l’intérieur même d’un théâtre.

L’installation darlingARCADE sera présentée en collaboration avec la Fonderie Darling (http://www.fonderiedarling.org). Ce centre d’art contemporain situé dans le district de Griffintown abritera la boutique darlingARCADE à l’occasion des Journées de la culture de Montréal qui se dérouleront du 30 septembre au 2 octobre 2011.
