Ghosts in the Machine: The Inquest of Mary Gallagher

Les fantômes dans la machine: L’enquête du meurtre de Mary Gallagher de Alison Loader  marque la huitième installation ou intervention de Urban Occupations Urbaines. Cette exposition a lieu dans la salle de répétition du Théâtre Centaur, anciennement l’emplacement du poste de police de Griffintown (1875) et où l’arrestation de Susan Kennedy, accusée du meurtre de Mary Gallagher, s’est déroulée (1879).

Alors que Fantômes est de toute évidence une installation vidéo, la création de Loader fonctionne également en tant qu’intervention théâtrale et critique socioculturelle d’inégalités sexuelles à travers les récits et témoignages dérivant de l’enquête du meurtre de Mary Gallagher et de son assassine Susan Kennedy. L’installation de Loader est une création qui à la fois déplace et déforme notre notion de la vérité en engageant l’imagination de l’interlocuteur à travers le langage de ses matériaux et leurs configurations acoustiques et spatiales.

Les éléments sonores de cette installation ont été créés en collaboration avec la metteure en scène Micheline Chevrier, et grâce aux talents des interprètes suivants : Deena Aziz, Dean Fleming, Alexandria Haber, Tristan D. Lalla, Diana Fajrajsl, et Julie Tamiko Manning. Au cours d’une seule journée, cette équipe de création a adapté pour l’écran les différents témoignages, avec l’aide du réalisateur Jason Lee et de notre technicien de son Lachlan Fletcher. Nous sommes très reconnaissants envers ces artistes et leurs contributions inestimables à la création de Fantômes : il va sans dire que leurs voix ont enrichi les différentes couches du récit de l’installation de Loader, en donnant vie à ces fantômes qui peuplent depuis toujours une des légendes les plus intrigantes de Griffintown.

Alison Loader’s video installation Ghosts in the Machine: The Inquest of Mary Gallagher marks Urban Occupations Urbaines’ eighth installation/ intervention. The exhibition took place in the Centaur Theatre’s rehearsal studio, once the location of Griffintown’s Police Station (1875) and the site where Susan Kennedy was charged with the beheading and murder of Mary Gallagher (1879).

While Ghosts, at first glance, operates as a video installation, Loader’s piece also performs as a theatrical intervention and socio-cultural critique of gender inequities through the narratives and witness testimonies surrounding the inquest of Mary Gallagher’s murder and her murderess Susan Kennedy. Loader’s installation is a work that both displaces and distorts notions of truth by engaging the imagination of the viewer through the language of her materials and their acoustic and spatial configurations.

The sound component to this installation was created in collaboration with director Micheline Chevrier and the talented cast of actors: Deena Aziz, Dean Fleming, Alexandria Haber, Tristan D. Lalla, Diana Fajrajsl, and Julie Tamiko Manning. Over the course of one day this creative team dramatized readings of the witness testimonies, which were recorded by filmmaker Jason Lee and our sound technician Lachlan Fletcher. We are especially grateful for the contributions of these artists to the process of creating Ghosts, undoubtedly their voices have enriched the narrative layering of Loader’s installation by giving fictional representation to the ensemble of ghosts who have constituted aspects of Griffintown’s most intriguing local legend.
