Théâtre Nulle Part and some thoughts on performance and «architecture parlante»

While the history and narratives of space have the capacity to feed the creative process – becoming materials for the creation of a performance – the history of spaces also engender stories that speak of and through the existing built environment. This is the power and affect of sites like Le Dalhousie. It is in this sense that architecture reveals its agency and ability to communicate or “talk”, as well as its potential for collaborating in the creation and production of community through site specific performance. Re:imagining an Other Public Space: Le Dalhousie, Griffintown

Performances at Le Dalhousie show that there is public art that feeds dominant divisions of power and space, as well as public art interventions that contest these divisions by rehearsing the publicness of space. In this way, while Le Dalhousie contends for a place in Griffintown’s future, it also temporarily plays a key role in a process of re/conceptualizating the meaning of what constitutes public spaces.
